Unveiling the 7th Annual Focus Features Student Short Film Showcase Winners
The 35th annual Gotham Awards Ceremony celebrated the talents of five up-and-coming filmmakers, who were recognized for their exceptional short films. This year's showcase, now in its seventh edition, highlighted the diverse and innovative work of students from across the United States. The winners were selected from a pool of 20 graduate film programs by a panel of esteemed filmmakers and curators.
Maria Regina Rios Ceja
Regina Rios, a talented filmmaker from Ciudad Constitución, Mexico, captivated audiences with her film, Maybe I'll Find You in a Robbery. The film tells the heartwarming story of a young girl's creative plan to reconnect with her imprisoned mother during the festive Christmas season. This powerful narrative showcases Rios' ability to weave compelling stories that resonate with viewers.
ishkwaazhe Shane McSauby
Born and raised in Grand Rapids, Michigan, McSauby brings a unique perspective to the industry. As an American filmmaker and a member of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians, his film The Beguiling made its international debut at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival and its U.S. premiere at SXSW. McSauby's work explores themes of identity and community, offering a fresh and authentic voice in the film world.
Cameron Clay
Cameron Clay, a filmmaker and editor from Prince George's County, Maryland, presents Jesus is Coming (to take the Church away), a thought-provoking film that delves into the intricate dynamics between Black men. Clay's work is known for its quiet intensity and exploration of complex social issues, making him a notable figure in contemporary cinema.
Alexander Molochnikov
Based in New York, Alexander Molochnikov is a Russian filmmaker and theater director. His film, Extremist, a powerful exploration of political prisoner Sasha Skochilenko, earned him the Live Action Award and the Special Jury Award at the 2025 BAFTA North America. Molochnikov's work showcases his versatility and talent in both film and theater.
Sergio Muñoz Esquer
Sergio Muñoz Esquer, a Mexican filmmaker, director, writer, and producer, presents Ballad of an Immigrant With Memory. This film, like much of his work, delves into the intricate themes of human connection, identity, and immigration through a Latinx lens. Esquer's unique storytelling style and cultural insights make him a prominent voice in the industry.
Each of these talented filmmakers will receive a $2,000 grant and the opportunity to showcase their work on Focus Features' digital streaming platform, providing them with a valuable platform to reach a wider audience and further their careers.
